Calvince Gaucho ‘Ghetto President’ Biography: Education, Job & Net Worth

Gaucho 'Ghetto President' Biography: Education, Family, Job & Net Worth

Gaucho’s real name is Calvin Okoth. He is a famous political activist in Kenya. He started a political movement which now has political branches in every county, the Bunge la Mwananchi. He is known to have guts, he is courageous, and is known for airing challenges facing the common mwananchi. Some Kenyans, like Maverick Aoko, described him as a “GOON”.

Gaucho has been very close to big politicians in the country. He is a close friend of Mama Ida. Even during his birthday on 4th February 2026, Mama Ida spoon-fed him a cake, and they celebrated together. He then wrote on his Facebook account, “Thank you, Mama Ida Odinga, for the cake and birthday wishes.”

He has had a long-standing, close relationship with the Odinga family. The late Prime Minister Raila really loved him as his son, and there are several photos of them that they took together.

Age & Background

Gaucho was born in 1992. He is currently 34 years old as of 2026. He was born in Rongo, Migori. He is the eldest among his siblings and really comes from a poor background. From several sources, he never had a chance to attend school beyond Class 6, after he became an orphan following the death of both parents.

Gaucho moved from village life to seek life in Nairobi city in 2004. He started his life in the informal settlement of Korogocho. He then joined a slum football team from the Dandora area. That is where he earned the name Gaucho because of his skills on the pitch, which his fellows compared to those of Ronaldinho of Brazil.

The same football team he joined had a secret agenda of carrying out robberies, which is common in slums like Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Kayole, and Githurai. At one point, he almost faced death when they went to raid a fuel station in Ruiru for KSh 2 million. Some of his friends were shot while he watched, and that really changed him. That was in April 2014.

After being arrested, he was rescued by Rosemary Odinga, whom he had met earlier during a political rally. He decided to reform afterwards.

Education

Gaucho confirmed that he dropped out in Class 6 during an interview on NTV Kenya on Thursday, April 23rd, 2026, but he said that it really shaped him to become the youth representative from the informal settlement.

“Ni kweli nimewacha shule katika darasa la sita. Lakini nimeteuliwa kuwawakilisha vijana wa ghetto… mimi kama ghetto president, naelewa mashida zao,” he said.

Some reports show that he joined Diguna Discipleship Training College for religious and leadership training.

Job

On April 16, 2026, through Gazette Notice No. 5733 by Johnson Sakaja, Calvin Gaucho was officially appointed to the Board of Management of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for a three-year term.

Gaucho claimed that Raila Odinga played a significant role in his appointment by recommending him to Governor Sakaja nearly two years earlier.

The move sparked significant debate due to Gaucho’s background as a primary school dropout (Class 6) and his reputation as a political “activist”.

Many Kenyans questioned the criteria for appointing an individual without a medical or professional administrative background to oversee a Level 5 referral facility.

Net Worth

As a non-executive board member of a Level 5 facility, Gaucho is paid through allowances rather than a monthly salary. Based on Salaries and Remuneration Commission guidelines and reports on county entity remuneration for 2026, his estimated compensation includes sitting allowances of approximately KSh 8,000 to KSh 10,000 per official meeting, with about eight sittings monthly.

Members typically receive a retainer ranging from KSh 60,000 to KSh 80,000 to ensure their availability, and a transport allowance of KSh 20,000 per month.
