Philip Aroko Narrates part of his life journey at Oga Obina Show
Philip Aroko, alias Otete or Goodlife, rose to national attention after the tragic death of the late Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were. Following the incident, Aroko was arrested and accused of being involved in the case. He later chose to represent himself in court without a lawyer and successfully defended himself, walking free after being found innocent.
His courage and confidence impressed many Kenyans during the Kasipul parliamentary by-election campaigns. Aroko stood out for his fluent English, bold speeches, and fearless approach as an independent candidate. He faced a strong political wave led by ODM bigwigs, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
Despite being a first-time aspirant against a powerful party, Aroko put up a brave fight. However, he lost the seat to Boyd Were, the son of the late MP, who won with 16,819 votes against Aroko’s 8,476 votes. Even in defeat, Aroko earned the admiration of many Kenyans for his determination and confidence.
Philip Aroko’s Early Life
A week after losing the election, Aroko appeared on the popular Oga Obina Show, where he openly shared his life story.
He said he began his education in his rural village, studying from Class One to Class Six. He later moved to Homa Bay to live with his brother and joined Shauri Yako Primary School. He performed very well and described himself as a bright pupil.

He later joined Homa Bay High School but dropped out in Form Three due to a lack of school fees. After returning to the village, he enrolled at Kakelo Secondary School, where he later sat for his KCSE and scored a C+. He explained that the tough environment and financial struggles affected his performance.
After completing Form Four, Aroko moved to Nairobi, where he lived with his brother-in-law, a police officer who worked in Embakasi and lived along Thika Road. He stayed with him for about one year before securing a job in a supermarket. After working for several years, he later became a taxi driver. When he became financially stable, he moved to Mombasa and joined a college, where he studied psychology.

During the interview, Aroko revealed that he is the second-to-last born in a family of eleven children. Growing up in such a large family pushed him to work extremely hard to secure a better future for himself and to support his family.

Aroko is a wealthy businessman with significant investments. He owns several vehicles and real estate properties across the country. In the past, he has also been linked to allegations of involvement in gold-related fraud cases, though no conviction has been publicly confirmed. His net worth is approximately KSh 400 million.
