How to Get Affordable Housing in Kenya

How the Affordable Housing Programme Began

The Affordable Housing Programme was launched by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017 as one of the key projects to be completed during his term. A total of 500,000 housing units were planned for construction. By the end of Uhuru’s leadership, only around 13,000 units had been completed.

When President William Ruto was elected as the 5th President in 2022, he continued the initiative and promised to construct 200,000 housing units per year for five years.

The current cost of living has become increasingly high, especially in urban areas where people pay rent and bills every month. With the government introducing affordable housing, many Kenyans are now eager to own homes.

So far in 2025, several affordable housing projects have been completed in major towns across Kenya.

This guide explains everything you need to know about getting affordable housing in Kenya, including cost, application process, qualifications, and registration requirements.

How to Get Affordable Housing in Kenya Online

The easiest way to apply is through the Boma Yangu online portal, where you can register, select a unit, and make payments. Services are also available on eCitizen.

Step-by-step process:

1. Visit the Boma Yangu Website
Go to www.bomayangu.go.ke

2. Create an Account
Enter your National ID and official phone number to register. A confirmation message will be sent to your phone.

3. Activate Your Account
Log in and update your profile with correct details such as your county, monthly income, and preferred housing unit.

4. Start Contributing
Follow the instructions to deposit money via M-Pesa or bank transfer. Regular contributions increase your chances of getting a house allocation.

5. Apply for a Unit
After contributing, apply for your preferred unit based on your budget.

6. Wait for Allocation
Allocation is done fairly, without corruption or tribalism. Priority is given to people who do not own homes, and consistent contributors have a higher chance of success.

There is no need to visit government offices; online application is enough.
