Winnie Odinga Irmgard is the lastborn daughter of the late former Prime Minister and ODM leader, Raila Odinga, and Ida Betty Odinga. In their family, she is the one who has inherited most traits from his father; from their family, she is the one who is mostly involved in politics, and she has built her own identity beyond her famous surname, known for her advocacy for young people, economic empowerment, and fighting for human rights.
Early Life and Background
Her native home is in Bondo, Siaya County, in the Nyanza region. She was born on Tuesday, 6 March 1990, in Nairobi. Growing up, Winnie experienced both the privilege of being part of a wealthy family and the pressure that comes with being part of the Odinga family. Her childhood was shaped by political activism, state confrontations, public scrutiny, and periods of national tension. Unlike many children, she grew up attending rallies, political meetings, and civic discussions that exposed her early to issues of governance, inequality, and justice.
Despite the high-profile environment, her parents emphasized discipline, education, and social responsibility. This upbringing played a crucial role in shaping her outspoken personality and political consciousness.
Winnie had a very close relationship with her father; she always accompanied Raila to most of the political events and duties. She was introduced to politics at a very young age of 12.
Her siblings include the late Fidel Odinga, who was the eldest son, second-born Rosemary Odinga, the elder sister, and Raila Jr. Odinga, third-born, the only remaining brother.
Education Journey
Winnie Odinga, after completion of her primary education at Rusinga School in Nairobi, joined Brookhouse International School in Karen, Nairobi. She then flew to the US and joined a University in Philadelphia, where she graduated with a degree in International Business and Corporate Communication. In 2016, she was back in Kenya to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration at USIU.

Political Career
Winnie Odinga was the Executive Coordinator and Private Secretary for Raila since September 2016. She has also been the Director of Green Outreach Foundation Africa since January 2014, where she assists in the access and utilization of the renewable energy sources by linking international investors with Renewable energy projects in Kenya.
She is an active member of the Orange Democratic Movement. Over time, she rose through the party ranks and became a prominent voice for youth inclusion within ODM structures. Because of this, she was nominated as a Member of Parliament in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in November 2022.
Her Political Future
Many thought she would vie for a seat in parliament, but speaking to the media, she said she currently has no plan and also hinted at quitting EALA, as she said other people are also suited for the position to bring new leadership.
