Raila Odinga passed away on 15 October 2025 at the age of 80 while receiving medical treatment in India. According to medical reports, he collapsed during a morning walk and was rushed to Devamatha Hospital near Kochi, where he suffered a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead.

His death triggered an outpouring of grief across Kenya and beyond. President William Ruto described him as a “beacon of courage” and the “father of Kenya’s democracy.” A seven-day national mourning period was declared, and Raila was accorded a state funeral with full military honours.

World leaders, including India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, paid tribute to Raila, praising his commitment to democracy, pan-Africanism, and national unity.

His body was flown back to Kenya for a state funeral held at Nyayo National Stadium before being laid to rest at his family farm in Bondo, Siaya County, in accordance with his wishes.
