10 Best Things to Do During a Visit to Kisumu (2026 Guide)
Kisumu shores
I used to live in Nairobi, where I visited various places such as Uhuru Park, Kibera Estate, Bomas of Kenya, and Ngong Hills. I love exploring and taking pictures, and I worked as a club photographer. Unfortunately, one day while coming from work, thugs stole all my gadgets, including my favourite camera, a Nikon D7500, which I had bought after a long period of hustling. I was heartbroken because I lost my job and could no longer afford to pay rent in Roysambu, Nairobi. As a result, I decided to return to my native city, Kisumu.
During my stay in Kisumu, I continued my adventure of exploring different places, taking pictures using my iPhone 11. I came to realise that although Nairobi has many beautiful places to visit, Kisumu remained the best place for me. The people in Kisumu are friendlier, the environment is cooler, and unlike Nairobi, there is no congestion in services. Transport fares and the cost of living are relatively cheap, and generally, Kisumu offers a peaceful stay.
Kisumu, or Kisumo as Luo residents call it, is one of Kenya’s most underrated cities. It is located on the shores of Lake Victoria and offers a relaxed lifestyle, beautiful sunsets, rich Luo culture, fresh fish, and friendly people. Unlike Nairobi’s fast pace, Kisumu moves slowly, and that is why many visitors fall in love with it.
Whether you’re a tourist, a local looking for weekend ideas, or someone planning to visit Western Kenya, here are the best things to do in Kisumu.
List of 10 Best Things to Do During a Visit to Kisumu
1. Visit Dunga Beach
Dunga Beach is one of the most popular places in Kisumu. It is located on the shores of Lake Victoria, where you can enjoy a full view of the lake. Many hotels are set up along the beach, where you can enjoy fresh fried fish. Several boats are also lined up for visitors who want to enjoy boat rides at a cost of KSh 500 to KSh 2,000, depending on the type of boat and duration. You can also take beautiful photos of the scenery.
Dunga Beach is a few kilometres from Kisumu town and can be reached by boda boda in about 15 to 20 minutes.
Tip: Visit around 5:30 pm for golden-hour photos and go with Kisumu Nami.

2. Explore Impala Sanctuary
Impala Sanctuary is one of the best wildlife parks and is just a few minutes from the city centre. It is within walking distance, but you can also choose to ride a bicycle. At the gate, visitors are warmly received by the staff and guided after paying the entrance fee.
What impressed me most was that after seeing animals such as cheetahs, various species of tortoises, lions, zebras, and impalas, there is a cool resting place under large trees where you can relax while enjoying views of Lake Victoria.
3. Shop at Kibuye Market
Kibuye Market is a large open-air market where many items are sold, mainly foodstuffs such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals. It is the best place to buy sweet bananas, especially Rabolo. You will also find fish (rech), omena, and beautiful artefacts such as pots and unique hand-sewn clothes.

4. Take a Day Trip to Ahero Rice Fields
Ahero is an agricultural area mainly known for rice farming. Due to poor drainage, the area often experiences flooding during heavy rains, as many houses are susceptible to water damage. It is located approximately 22–25 kilometres southeast of Kisumu city.
At Ahero, you can find plenty of Pishori rice at affordable prices from large plantations. Visitors can also walk around and see how rice is planted and harvested.
5. Experience Luo Culture and Music
In Kenya, no community enjoys life like the Luo community. In Kisumu, enjoying life is almost compulsory. There are many Ohangla music events, traditional dance performances, and cultural ceremonies.
Kisumu also has a lively nightlife, with popular clubs such as Black Pearl and Club Da Place in Mamboleo Estate. These spots feature top DJs and nyama choma to keep your night exciting.
6. Take a Walk Around Kisumu
When visiting a place, it is important to explore different areas, not just one spot. Kisumu has many estates with different lifestyles. Milimani is associated with high-end buildings and well-earning residents, while Nyalenda has informal settlements mainly occupied by low-income earners. Other estates cater to middle-income residents, similar to Roysambu in Nairobi.
You can also visit Migosi and go further to Kibos Sugar to see how sugar is processed.
7. Learn Some Luo Language
Most Luos speak English, even street vendors. As a visitor, you can still learn a few Luo words to help you connect better with locals.
Examples:
-
Girl – Nyako
-
How are you? – Idhi nade
-
Let’s go – Wadhi
8. Visit Kit Mikayi
Kit Mikayi is a place you should not miss. It features massive rocks stacked on top of each other, fascinatingly. Many visitors wonder how these rocks came to be arranged so perfectly.
Located about a 40-minute drive from Kisumu town, the site has more than five large rocks placed systematically. The Luo community believes it is a sacred rock formation with deep cultural significance.

9. Visit Manual Gold Mining in Asembo, Siaya
If you are in Kisumu, consider exploring nearby areas. Asembo is about a two-hour drive from Kisumu town. It is a blessed village rich in gold, which serves as the main economic activity for residents.
People mine gold manually by entering deep pits, after which it is washed and retrieved using mercury. Watching this process is interesting and educational. The area is near Ndori Market, not far from the home of the late Raila Odinga.
10. Visit Raila’s Gravesite at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi
Raila Odinga was regarded as a Luo king by many in the Luo community. He passed away in October 2025 after a short illness and was loved both locally and internationally. He was accorded a state burial by the Kenyan government under the leadership of President Ruto.
Many politicians and celebrities visited his burial site at Opoda Home to pay their last respects. The area is located in Bondo, near Got Ramogi, a sacred hill and forest believed to be the ancestral cradle of the Luo community, where Ramogi Ajwang settled after migrating from Sudan.
Conclusion
Kisumu offers many enjoyable experiences during your stay. The list above highlights just a few examples, as there are many more beautiful places to explore.
